Team Argos

Doing Our Part

Overview

Team #1756's visualization group consists of just two students (and three mentors). Both of our students are returning from last year. They took home the "Best Rookie Animation" trophy in 2006 and came back this year with their experience and a drive to create an even more complex video that would stretch their skills against the "Think Green" challenge.

If you look at the preview, you'll notice a few things that stand out. First off, please read the plaque as it shares the essence of the video. Make special note of the fountain, which not only bears our team # but is also in the shape of the FIRST Logo. You may also recognize the Murray Baker Bridge and the Illinois River stretching out behind the park.

Geof Roberts is the lead and has been a tremendous help with both modelling and mapping of the objects within our fictional city. Austyn Simons has shared the modelling and mapping responsibilities as well as being our sound guy. Both students have worked dilligently over the past six weeks to become more familiar with the various features of the software in order to make the most advanced animation possible. They've worked long hours and have given considerable thought to the "finer details" of the animation to make the city seem more real.

Both are Juniors at Manual High School in Peoria, IL. Geof is a recent recruit for the JROTC program through the school while Austyn has been busy juggling our gruling schedule with wrestling and student council responsibilities. Both students have shown tremendous growth in their knowledge and skill level within the 3D Studio Max software over the course of our 6 week creation process. In addition to 3DS Max, we used Paint Shop Pro to help create a few of the final maps used in the animation. Caterpillar, Inc. provided the sound booth for recording the voice over used in the final soundtrack. Our team is sincerely grateful for everyone who helped get us to the finishing point on this year's animation! Go Team Argos!

Theme

This year's theme is: Thinking Green.

Thinking Green. Sustainable Design. Environmentally Responsible.

It's called by many names, but it means one thing: caring about the planet we live on, and making sure that the things we create have as little negative impact on the Earth as possible.

It's about meeting our current needs without preventing future generations from meeting theirs. It's about approaching the creative process with a respect for using resources efficiently. And it's about each of us playing our part to do something that impacts all of us.

About FIRST
The FIRST Robotics Competition is an exciting, multinational competition that teams professionals and young people to solve an engineering design problem in an intense and competitive way. The program is a life-changing, career-molding experience -- and a lot of fun.

FIRST Robotics Competition combines the excitement of sport with science and technology to create a unique varsity sport for the mind. FRC helps high-school-aged young people discover the rewarding and engaging world of innovation and engineering.

The FIRST Robotics Competition stages short games played by remote-controlled robots. The robots are designed and built in 6 weeks (out of a common set of basic parts) by a team of 15 to 25 high-school-aged young people and a handful of engineers-mentors. The students pilot the robots on the field. Each school year, teams are formed in the fall. Competitions take place in March and April. The FIRST Robotics Competition Regional events are typically held in university arenas. They involve 40 to 70 teams cheered by thousands of fans over two and a half days.

In 2006, the competition reached over 28,000 high-school-aged young people on over 1,125 teams in 33 regional events. Teams came from Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Israel, Mexico, the U.K., and almost every U.S. state.
